How to Prepare for the 6th Annual Yorkson Community Garage Sale

Community garage sales are a GREAT way to get organized, reduce clutter, make a little extra cash, while getting to know your neighbours!

Oftentimes, when we ask for feedback on our annual Yorkson community garage sales, participants tell us they feel a closer bond to their community.

Plus, the larger your sale, the more enticing it is for potential customers – and with us taking care of the marketing, you hardly have to worry about a thing!
How does it work?

We just ask that participants sign up by a certain date, and then we can take care of letting the public know by advertising and providing maps at Lynn Fripps Elementary (21020 83 Ave, Langley, BC V2Y 2C4) the morning of the sale.

All YOU have to do is prepare your garage, driveway or yard with your items for sale, remember to have some change on hand – and a smile on your face to greet your neighbours!
Here are some tips to help you stay organized for a smooth, successful garage sale

Make it look like a store

Do your best to keep items organized by type or theme, so everything is easy to find and all together. Clothes can hang on a free-standing clothes rack, and other items can be lined along the driveway or garage in neat boxes or on folding tables. Consider using signage for each section to clearly outline what people can expect. We encourage placing the more exciting, unique, or fun items closer to the front of the sale to draw attention.

Feeling creative? You can even have a big sign at the foot of your driveway – anything to bolster attention and encourage people to come up and say “Hi” to you – and buy your stuff!

Have props available to help sell your items (if needed)

When preparing for your sale, think about what people might need or want when they are checking out your items. For example, do you have have a lot of accessories for sale? Have a mirror available so people can see how they look.

Selling electronics or small appliances? Have batteries or an extension cord handy so they can see it works.

Have change on hand

Get change from the bank; plenty of small bills and coins so you can quickly make change. A cash box or a fanny pack (these are back in style, we hear) can be helpful. Just be sure to keep your money secure!

Price to sell

Just like pricing a home for sale, pricing your items properly is a great way to ensure a successful garage sale!

A good garage sale rule of thumb is to sell items at 10 to 25% of their original value, and another useful technique is bundling like items, such as books or DVDs: “five books for $5”

Be prepared and have FUN!

You’ll be out in the sun for hours preparing, hosting and then picking everything up, so be sure to dress comfortably, wear sunscreen, and stay hydrated. Keep your house locked and your phone on you at all times… and that smile on your face to greet your neighbours! 🙂

We’re excited to see you this weekend!!!
